Great Gifts for November are called for occasions that stretch from birthday Topaz to fragrant sage at Thanksgiving. November birthdays span two astrological signs, Scorpio, associated with basil, the ”royal herb” to the ancient Greeks, and Saggitarious, associated with sage, a fragrant herb complementing turkey.

Basil - Known as the botanical name is derived from the Greek ”to be fragrant.” In India, Hindus believed that if a leaf of basil were buried with them, it would serve as their passport to heaven. Widely grown as a kitchen herb, it is used fresh or dried to flavor meats, fish, salads, pizza, soup and sauces. The dried leaves have a fragrant aroma faintly reminiscent of anise, and a warm, sweet, aromatic, mildly pungent flavor. Tea made from basil leaves is a stimulant. Basil tea is used for nausea and gas pains. Tea made with basil and peppercorns is a folk remedy to reduce fever. Since the delicate aroma of basil is quickly destroyed by cooking, basil leaves are frequently sprinkled over cold or warm dishes before serving. Used for centuries as a powerful preservative, research indicates that it contains antioxidants, which slow spoilage.

Sage - Used to treat wounds, ease gastrointestinal complaints, and heal sore throat and bleeding gums. Some traditions hold it’s best to burn the sage and smudge the body with it. Other uses include sage infusion, extract and tincture. Sage is an overpowering, somewhat bitter spice useful for strong barbeque-type seasonings. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Sage leaf for ‘External: Inflammations of the mucous membranes of nose and throat. Internal: Dyspeptic symptoms, excessive perspiration.’

Topaz - The name ‘Topaz’ originates from Sanskrit, meaning ‘fire’. In the 19th century, Russian Tsarinas particularly favored golden orange stones and this is why the highest quality variety of topaz is named ‘Imperial’. Topaz is believed to bring true love, success in endeavours, understanding of relationships, expression of ideas, trust, health and growth. Wearing the birthstone associated with one’s date of birth is thought to bring good luck and protection. In modern times, birthstone jewellery is a popular keepsake gift for special occasions.

Topaz is also the 23rd and 50th wedding anniversary stone.
