This month’s traditional birthstone, turquoise, is widely used in jewelry but it is also incorporated in clothing accessories, both the color and the gem. It is generally accepted that turquoise gets its name from “pierre turquoise” a French phrase meaning “Turkish stone.” Others believe that the name comes from the Persian word “fiouze,” meaning the color turquoise. The beautiful stone was mined by Egyptians as early as 6000 BC.
December is certainly the month for poinsettias equated with celebration, success, reassurance, and good cheer. Poinsettia Day is on December 12th, declared in honour of the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, for whom the plant is named. Today poinsettias are found in reusable planters, silk arrangements and even crafted into mohair poinsettia ornaments.
Consider celebrating the Winter Solstice, also called Yule, December 21, with soy candles on that dark eve. The light, crisp scent will symbolically recognize that the days will get longer, signaling the coming of spring. The tradition of lighting a fire still lives today in many cultures around the world. Put a modern twist on honoring the sun by giving a foldable solar charger or LED lights to shine with economy.
Yes, there are many reasons for gift giving in December. Perhaps the most economical presents are those that are given again and again. Money Management International has named the Thursday before Christmas “National Regifting Day”, in 2008 falling on December 18. One example of a formalization of this activity are the white elephant gift exchanges, in which items can be regifted from year to year. The term originated on an episode of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld (”The Label Maker”) although the practice pre-dates the term substantially.

Besides buying gifts for the family I also have to give them to some of my coworkers. I know some of the loveliest people at my office and it’s such a fulfilling task to buy them something, and personalize it as much as possible. This year I’m buying 4 of my friends the ipod shuffle. The good part was that I ordered the ipods online from http://www.ipodyourlife.co.in/make_it.aspx, have also begun hunting for their favorite music, so I can load it on before gifting them away. I hope they love the ipod I’ve got them.
